Governor General recognizes Saskatoon Health Region security officers

Four members of Saskatoon Health Region's security team have been recognized by the Governor General of Canada for going above and beyond the call of duty.

This past Friday, security officers Chris Clark and Tyler Campbell were presented with Medals of Bravery from Governor General David Johnston during a ceremony in Rideau Hall in Ottawa. Two of their colleagues, Stacy Anweiler and Roel Benedicto will be receiving a Letter of Commendation at a later date along with registered nurse Steve Atchison.

On the evening of March 15, 2013 Clark and Campbell rescued a female patient from a burning room in the Irene and Leslie Dubé Centre for Mental Health. Thick smoke made entry into the room difficult but the security officers persevered and were able to locate the patient and bring her to a safer area. Other members of the team assisted and secured the perimeter around the fire.

"You never think you're going to be in this kind of situation," says Campbell. "But when we got the call about a fire and a patient still in the room, our training kicked in and we just did what we had to."

"It was a total team effort which is how we do our jobs every day," says Clark. "We may have been the ones to go into the room but the other members of our unit made sure that everyone else in the building was safe."

A team effort between Saskatoon Health Region, SEIU (Service Employees International Union) allowed the others involved in the incident; Anweiler, Benedicto, Edmund Inocente, Latish Karki and Atchison to go to Ottawa for the ceremony.

"We are extremely proud of our staff for the courage and leadership they showed during a dangerous situation," says Nilesh Kavia, Vice President Finance and Corporate Services Saskatoon Health Region. "It's great to see them receive national recognition for their efforts."

A date for the presentation of the Letter of Commendation has yet to be determined.
