Saskatchewan recruits respirologist specializing in cystic fibrosis

Saskatoon – Spending five years in Saskatoon, while completing his residency with the College of Medicine, was all Dr. Julian Tam needed to tell him this is where he wants to be.

“I had the opportunity to work alongside some excellent doctors and medical teams, ” says Dr. Tam who had enrolled in the University of Saskatchewan’s internal medicine residency program in 2008 after graduating from medical school at McMaster University. “My memories of Saskatoon, and what I knew it had to offer, had me thinking when I left that this is a place I would like to come back to and practice.”

After completing his Internal medicine residency and respirology fellowship in Saskatoon, Dr. Tam moved to Toronto two years ago to pursue additional fellowships in cystic fibrosis and lung transplantation. Upon completing his training in June, he joined Saskatoon Health Region and the University of Saskatchewan’s Division of Respirology, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, with his primary focus on the Region’s adult cystic fibrosis (CF) program.

“Cystic fibrosis patients require a lot of different medical expertise to help them manage their illness,” says Dr. Tam. “During my residency here, I really found it rewarding working with the other members of the CF team to develop the best plan we can for each patient. I look forward to sharing what I learned during my fellowship to further strengthen the care we deliver to patients.”

Dr. Tam has been hired under Saskatchewan’s new academic clinical funding plan (ACFP). This program is a partnership between the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Advanced Education, College of Medicine, Saskatchewan Medical Association, and local Regional Health Authorities. It supports physician recruitment and retention and provides clinicians with protected time for teaching and research. Dr. Tam is the second specialist for Saskatoon Health Region and the University of Saskatchewan to be recruited under this new program.

“I’m thrilled that we have been able to use ACFP to attract a specialist with Dr. Tam’s expertise,” says Dr. George Pylypchuk, head of Medicine for Saskatoon Health Region and the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Medicine. “It shows how by working together, we can create the right environment to attract bright, young specialists to work in Saskatchewan and train our medical students, which will further build our capacity for the future.”

“After doing his residency and a fellowship in Saskatchewan, I’m really pleased Dr. Tam is coming back to join our team of health professionals,” Health Minister Dustin Duncan said.  “People with cystic fibrosis and other respiratory conditions across the province will benefit from better access to this specialized physician care.”

Dr. Tam started in early July. He is originally from Burlington, Ontario and looks forward to meeting all his new patients and their families in the coming weeks as he settles into his practice.
