Residential Treatment - Youth (Calder Centre) (12-18years)

Accessing Services

Referrals to Calder Centre are made through an addictions case manager who is able to coordinate a continuum of care for the client before, during and after their stay.  To arrange for an addictions case manager please refer to Community Addictions Services. 

Once intake assessment information is gathered and evaluated, bookings for admission interviews and intakes are communicated to the referral agent and youth team.  Counsellors facilitate the intake process, which includes the signing of informed consents, collection of pertinent information, family interviews and comprehensive program orientation.

Who Do We Serve?

We provide services to Saskatchewan residents between ages of 12-18, who meet the admission criteria.

Services Offered:

Calder Centre Youth Program is a 12 bed residential treatment program providing residential treatment services to adolescents and families with substance use/abuse issues.  Calder Centre is a safe, inviting facility.  It affords youth and families an opportunity to evaluate the impact substance/abuse, identify their strengths and begin implementing changes that will contribute to a positive recovery lifestyle in the community.

As substance use/abuse is known to have a negative impact on many areas of a person's life, a multi-disciplinary approach is used to address family, school, and inter-personal relationship issues.

Program objectives include:

  • Providing a safe, trusting environment to help build therapeutic relationships with staff
  • Facilitating physical and emotional stability
  • Assessing individual needs
  • Providing counselling and education based on best practices
  • Assisting youth with developing a community recovery plan

The program is based on a four week stay but offers flexibility to shorten or extend the length of stay depending on the individual's needs.  Compressive screening and ongoing assessment is done to ensure treatment plans are developed to meet the specific needs of each youth.

An extensive amount of information is covered, targeting multiple facets of life.  These include:

  • Coping strategies
  • Cultural and spiritual resources
  • Direct feedback that address unhealthy behaviors
  • Education and discussions about core addiction
  • Effects of alcohol and other drug abuse
  • Emotion management
  • Exploration of appropriate self help programs
  • Impact of addiction on the family
  • Information about medical issues, such as HIV, other Blood Born Pathogens, STD, FAS/FAE and birth control
  • Life skills
  • Recreational and leisure activities
  • Vocational and/or education needs

A variety of therapeutic approaches and philosophies are implemented into service delivery which includes:

  • Competency Based
  • Creative Arts Opportunities
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Outward Bound Activities
  • Recreation Therapy
  • Trans theoretical Model of Change

Expression of spiritual and cultural beliefs, and anticipating in activities associated with tehse, is strongly encouraged.  The 12-Step programs are strongly endorsed and available to all clients.  Youth are orientated to these programs and educated on benefits they have to offer.

A significant emphasis placed on family involvement and developing a community recovery plan that identifies community based programs and activities to support recovery in the community.
