Community Specimen Collection

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine provides laboratory test information to physicians in the clinical areas of anatomic pathology, biochemistry, diagnostic molecular pathology, hematology, microbiology and transfusion medicine.

A network of community collection sites and acute care phlebotomy teams support access to these services.  The laboratory is fully integrated and offers standardized testing to support patient/client needs as they move through the continuum of care, programs and services.

Fasting for a Blood Collection

Fasting means you should not have anything to eat or drink for a minimum of 10 hours to a maximum of 14 hours before you go to the laboratory. For more information visit our Fasting Blood Collection Guidelines.

Collection Location Restrictions

Blood samples can only be taken at these specific collection locations for the following tests:

  • Special Coagulation*
  • Lactose Tolerance++
  • D-Xylose Tolerance~
​Pediatric Collections

Pediatric Collections of children less than 1 year of age: collection is only available at RUH Test Centre Monday through Friday 8:00am-4:30pm (hours Friday vary, so please call 306-655-2520 to confirm availability). 

We will do everything possible to prevent and treat pain.

  1. Provide education upon arrival
  2. Offer topical lidocaine
  3. Discuss the best comfort position
  4. Use distraction strategies
