Saskatoon Health Region Heart Safe Program
Automated External Defibrillators (AED)

When a person falls victim to sudden cardiac arrest, every second counts. Most people know that chances for survival increase with early CPR. What most people do not know is that for every minute that the patient is not defibrillated, chances of survival decreases by 10 percent.

Traditionally, defibrillators have been used by paramedics, nurse and physicians. Today, the technology exists to have affordable defibrillators available wherever people gather. The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) has put this technology in the hands of members of the public who have little or no medical training. At these public locations, on-site personnel can operate these defibrillators with minimal training.

Heart Safe Program

The Saskatoon Heart Safe Program (Public Access Defibrillation) is a community program aimed at providing rapid access to defibrillation in case of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).

Businesses and community venues that have the onsite protection of an AED have reported survival rates as high as 65%, in contrast to the 5% national survival rate for those who experience Sudden Cardiac Arrest without access to a nearby AED unit.

The goal of the Saskatoon Heart Safe program is for AEDs to be as common as fire extinguishers. By having AEDs in public locations such as businesses and community venues throughout Saskatoon and surrounding communities, lives will be saved… and it may be yours.
