Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan construction 50 per cent complete

Construction of the Children's Hospital of Saskatchewan has reached the halfway mark with the project hitting 50% construction completion this month.

"Our government is thrilled to see the progress on this important project," Health Minister Jim Reiter said. "We recognize our partners, the Saskatoon Health Region and the Children's Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan, for the hard work and dedication they put in to reach this exciting construction milestone. Once completed, the Children's Hospital will greatly contribute to quality patient care and meet the unique needs of mothers, babies, children and teens in our province."

"The progress on Children's Hospital of Saskatchewan is meaningful, especially to the thousands of people who have been fundraising for years to ensure that all the enhancements needed within this facility will be there when the doors open. We are grateful to all of those across the province who have worked so hard to move this project forward," says Brynn Boback-Lane, President and CEO of the Children's Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan. "In these final two years, we need the support of people across Saskatchewan now more than ever to help meet our goal and raise over $75 million to make our new provincial hospital a special place for kids, moms-to-be, and families."

Construction through December and the first part of 2017 included the creation of the rooftop enclosure and the installation of approximately 20 mechanical air handling units. Crews brought these components to the site using 62 flat-bed trailers then craned these units into place within the new rooftop enclosure. Work can now begin to install the elements to support the rooftop heliport on top of the mechanical equipment enclosure. This will support planned emergency helicopter service, allowing a direct connection to the new emergency departments on the ground floor.

"With construction moving along so swiftly, our teams responsible for planning for and providing care to our patients and families are aware the clock is ticking," says Jackie Mann, Saskatoon Health Region's Vice-President Integrated Health Services and Executive Sponsor for Children's Hospital of Saskatchewan. "There is an incredible amount of preparation going on related to how we will provide care in this new state-of-the-art facility. When we engaged families throughout the province in the design process, they also told us how they wanted their family experience to change in the new facility. Our goal is to truly deliver an exceptional family-centred experience. I am so proud of the teams' work so far. Saskatchewan families will not only see, but will feel the difference Children's Hospital of Saskatchewan and its healthcare teams will bring to this province when our doors open."

Over the next few months, construction work will continue on exterior walls, framing and window installation occurring to make all areas of the building exterior watertight. Inside, on-going interior steel stud work will continue, along with mechanical and electrical system rough-ins. Construction of the west edge of the structure will also be underway as the hospital begins to extend above roadways leading into the parkade. This overhang area will accommodate a portion of the pediatric and maternal floors of the hospital.

"It's an exciting time for all of us involved in making this hospital a reality," says Craig Ayers, Saskatoon Health Region's CHS Project Director. "Over the next few months, as the last portion of the hospital cantilevers out, you will begin to see the full scale and unique vision of this important facility being realized. Hundreds of people from fundraising to operations to construction are working every day to make this vision a reality. Our project team would also like to extend our appreciation to everyone involved, including our patients and families, our staff and physicians at Royal University Hospital. They have and continue to experience disruptions because of this important work. We thank all of you for your continued cooperation and support."

Construction completion remains on schedule and the $285.2 million project remains on budget. The hospital is currently scheduled to open in late 2019.
