Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan Construction Resumes

Statement from Dan Florizone, President and CEO, Saskatoon Health Region

Construction on the Children's Hospital of Saskatchewan is resuming today. It was halted nearly three weeks ago after the tragic death of a young worker on the site.

Since that very sad day, inspections and investigations by Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety and Graham Construction have taken place.

Graham continues to undergo a very thorough process to understand what went wrong, and how to ensure it never happens again. They have not only met the requirements set out by the Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety, but have performed a very detailed internal review, and we are confident that all the right steps have been taken. Graham recognizes that long-term vigilance will be required to make and keep the site safe for everyone every day.

It's time for work to get back underway. But as we move forward, we will not forget how important it is for everyone to get back home to their families and loved ones safely.

Again, I want to extend my condolences to the family and friends of the young man who died, and express my deep sympathy to his coworkers, all those who work on this site each day, and those staff and physicians who are working to make this hospital a reality. I also want to recognize once again those who responded to this tragedy, including our team in emergency, for their care.

This has been a very difficult and heartbreaking situation for everyone involved. I extend my gratitude and thanks to those within and outside of our organization for the additional support and understanding that this team has received over the last few weeks.
