Important emergency room services update

Saskatoon – Saskatoon Health Region is informing the public that the city's three emergency departments are under pressure. With Saskatoon hospitals continuing to be full this has resulted in a longer wait for patients in the emergency department who have been admitted for hospital care and are waiting for a bed on an appropriate unit.

If you arrive at emergency and are experiencing the following conditions you will receive priority treatment:

  • chest pain
  • stroke(signs/ symptoms: facial droop, arm weakness, slurred speech)
  • difficulty breathing
  • a large cut or wound
  • broken limbs
  • severe abdominal pain
  • sudden shortness of breath
  • sudden and severe headache.

The public is reminded that those arriving at emergency are not seen in chronological order but in order of the severity of their illness.

We ask the public to choose wisely and realize that patients who present with minor ailments will experience longer wait times in emergency and should seek alternative treatment at a medical clinic or with a family physician if at all possible. Those conditions may include:

  • cough/cold
  • prescription refill
  • minor cut or scrape.

If you believe you are in an emergency situation you should come to one of the emergency departments where staff can assess you.

Saskatoon Health Region will continue to move patients between the sites to ensure they are receiving timely care in an appropriate setting while balancing the needs of those patients waiting for a hospital bed. This may include moving triaged emergency patients to another facility if that facility is able to provide more timely care.

If you have non-emergency, health-related questions or concerns, please contact your healthcare provider or the provincial HealthLine at 811. HealthLine staff can help you decide whether you should treat your own symptoms, go to a minor emergency clinic, wait to see your doctor or go to a hospital emergency room.

A list of minor emergency and walk-in clinics is available at www.saskatoonhealthregion.ca under Quick Links.
