A familiar landmark at Royal University Hospital falls as demolition continues

Cameco Skywalk Demolision - August 12, 2014Saskatoon - For over 25 years, it sheltered thousands of patients and families walking into Royal University Hospital each week. Renamed and renovated in 2010, the Cameco Skywalk has become a familiar landmark for the hospital’s visitors, staff and physicians. Today, the RUH site forever changed as demolition to prepare for Saskatchewan’s new maternal and children’s hospital entered its last phase.

“Today our crews started dismantling the Skywalk by first cutting the bridge away from the RUH building then using cranes to lower it to the ground,” says Craig Ayers, Saskatoon Health Region’s project director of Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan. “This will mark approximately 90% completion of our demolition phase. It’s been phenomenal to watch the site transform over the last month and a half as crews have torn down the portion of the parkade where Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan will be built. You can certainly get a sense now of just how different this place will look with the new hospital.”

Cameco Skywalk to the RUH ParkadeBuilt in 1978 as part of the RUH hospital addition, the pedestrian link served as one of the main entrances into RUH. A new hospital entrance was opened in June on the same level of the parkade as the Skywalk.

Using an excavator with concrete cracking “jaws”, crews have been demolishing approximately 14,000 square metres of the parkade. Once the Skywalk has been lowered to the ground, crews will use the “jaw” to demolish the bridge and the elevator tower. Then, the final material removal, excavation and site leveling of the demolition area will be completed through end of August. Hospital construction start is currently scheduled for mid September.

Saskatoon Health Region would like to thank everyone for their patience during the increased construction activity at Royal University Hospital. Also, please remember RUH site is a construction zone, to drive slowly, follow signage and allow extra time to find parking.
